Phoenix Comicon Winners

January 28th, 2007 - One Response

Hi there -

So far, I’ve had two Phoenix winners for our free daily drawings. I thought that I posted this yesterday morning, but alas, I’m tired.

Friday’s Winner: Brandy
Saturday’s Winner: Oonagh

You’ve each won a KlawBerry giclee art print! (The very first ever)

Stop by our booth Sunday, and pick em up!

(or send me your addresses)

Congratz!

Daniel

PS. Yesterday was my birthday, and I got to meet Mike Mignola. Dawna came by and got the fella to draw me a Hellboy drawing where HB is saying “Happy Birthday”. Anyway, I got Mike to have a look at KlawBerry, and he was really complimentary, which makes me feel good. Mr. Mignola is a really upstanding guy.

PSS. The new Hellboy looks very, very promising. I’m getting it.

Phoenix Cactus Comicon

January 22nd, 2007 - No Responses

Hey Monster-Kids!

Steam Crow Press, the independant publishers of KlawBerry: Good Girl Bad World will be exhibiting at the Phoenix Cactus Comicon this weekend, January 26-27-28!

We’re still waiting to see if our huge shipment of KlawBerry books arrives in time; we can only hope that the 18 wheeler in charge of moving our books across the country will decide to pass on extra biscuits and gravy in Topeka, and get our monster-girl delivered here nice and early.

In any case, we’re prepared to have a good time, and showoff some new prints from the book, as well as our other fine book, Caught Creatures. We will also have our screen-printed t-shirts on hand, and some other surprises as well.

So, if you’re anywhere NEAR Phoenix, Arizona this weekend, stop by the Artist Alley section of the PCCC, and wish Daniel a Happy Birthday. (Saturday) He’s getting old, so he could use your encouragement.

Illustration Friday - Super Hero

January 19th, 2007 - 16 Responses
KlawBerry as Super Hero on Illustration Friday

I realized that my character KlawBerry is a super hero, about halfway through the writing process after she started to kick a little butt.

No, she’s not your typical super hero, that’s for certain, but she does dress in black and she’s got some extraordinary powers, so what-the-heck? She’s a “monster-girl super hero” as much as anything… maybe Hello Kitty mixed equally with Hellboy.

I know she looks a lot like a “super villain” but looks are deceiving; KlawBerry is a good monster girl, but sometimes she just can’t take anymore crap from the world and BLAM… she goes nova.

Comments are welcome!

KlawBerry Book Update - the book left Quebec Canada on Tuesday. I’m really hoping that it arrives here by next Friday, in time for the Phoenix Cactus Comicon! As soon as I get copies in hand, I’m sending them out to everyone who preordered.

Please feel free to link us up; this is a brand-new site, and could use some friendly linkage! Thanks!

I’m happy to announce that KlawBerry ships from our printer in the next day or two!

It will be tight, but there’s a good chance that Klawberry will arrive in time to display at the Phoenix Cactus Comicon, wo we’re doubly happy/nervous!

Anyway, we’re taking preorders right now. Just go to the “Buy KlawBerry” page, and we’ll ship it out as soon as they arrive.

Alrighty, back to work.

Bad World

January 7th, 2007 - No Responses

Though there are cool things in the Monstero World, sometimes it is a dark and dangerous place. It is occupied by lots of creatures, but they’re not always what they seem. Sometimes the cutest little creature is deadly; and the horrible monster could turn into a great friend.

Here are some photos taken by KlawBerry, of the Bad World, to give you an idea of what’s out there:

Good Girl

January 7th, 2007 - No Responses

KlawBerry is a good spirit, born of the sea. She’s a monster girl with sharp little claws, and a pair of horns that look a lot like hair. She’s good, but not “too” good. She can hold her own.

KlawBerry Intro - An indy press kid’s book

December 12th, 2006 - One Response

My name is Daniel M. Davis, and I’m the illustrator and co-author of “KlawBerry: Good girl. Bad world.” This mini-site is a focused way to help you learn all about little KlawBerry, so away we go.

What is KlawBerry?:

KlawBerry (the book) is a modern folktale. The story is inspired by all kinds of ancient mythology, Grimm Brothers fairytales, and folk stories from Africa, Europe, and India, all mashed together like a spicy red curry. It’s about a monster girl who finds strength and power in herself, as she makes a odd journey. Grrlpower, literally.

The artwork is a mashup of Kawaii goodness, Saturday morning cartoons, and happy mascots from Japanese and American candy wrappers, ran through a goth filter. I took added inpiration from Art Nouveau, toy design, and classic illustrated books. I wanted KlawBerry to look both fresh and modern, but as if you found it in a very old book.

KlawBerry is a little monster girl, with little black claws, big horns, and a single green eye. She’s cute, and she’s also a spirit of goodness. “KlawBerry” is also the name of a modern folktale by me (Daniel M. Davis), in the form of a book.

About Daniel M. DavisDaniel M Davis - PhotoI’m a Phoenix, Arizona illustrator, publisher, and graphic designer.I started publishing my own work after attending the 2004 San Diego Comic-Con, the largest and finest comic convention in North America. (You should go sometime.)

I decided then and there to craft my own illustration career with my own two hands; fate had had it’s chance, and so now it’s my turn to make something happen doing the kind of artwork that I love. It’s been going really well so far, and though it seems to be endless in scope, I really enjoy it.

The “M” in “Daniel M. Davis” isn’t because Daniel’s an ego-maniac; it’s just because there are zillions and billions of Daniel Davis’ out there, and it’s too late to change my name.

About Steam Crow Press Steam Crow Press is my publishing company that I utilize to create and promote my artwork. I run it with my wife, Dawna, who actually helped me write KlawBerry. So far, we’ve published KlawBerry, Caught Creatures, and a “corporate” sketchbook called “Skulled“.Basically, I used Steam Crow Press to help me shift my mind towards business goals, to help prevent me from being a starving artist for the rest of my life.
