Building Vector Beasties flyer, originally uploaded by SteamCrow.

I’m doing an illustration demo a the Phoenix Comicon, January 26, 2008.

This is the flyer that I made to hand to people at the event, so they’ll come check it out.

If you’re anywhere near Phoenix, stop by the comicon and ask me about monster abduction, vector secrets, and why I like to wear helmets.

KlawBerry Preview Video

January 7th, 2008 - No Responses

Hey you!

Here’s the brand new KlawBerry video preview!

I’m going to start doing this for all of our books, as I think that it adds a better way to experience our books then just photos alone. The only way to better experience our quality is through holding a copy in your very own hands!

International Chapter of the Junior Society

April 15th, 2007 - No Responses

So, Robert Mahar (of Mahar Drygoods fame) just started a new blog dedicated to really cool stuff for kids. You see, Robert is always on the lookout for cool stuff for his store, but sometimes the items just don’t fit. So, he’s compiling them on Junior Society.

Now, I know that there are tons of sites like this, but Robert is a different kind of guy. Simply put: Robert has terrific taste. He has an eye for really cool stuff, that has a tasty, vintage flair.

It’s not for everybody; it’s just for people with good taste.

Anyway, Mr. Mahar has done it again, and it’s great to just sit back, and enjoy the show.

I’m proud to announce that we’re going to be exhibiting at the Arizona Book Festival, Saturday April 14th, at the Carnegie Center, in Phoenix Az.

Yes, it’s free, and you’re invited. By me.

It’ looks to be quite a busy day, with tons of authors, publishers, and books to be checked out. Happily for us, we’ve got books, authors, AND illustrators in our team (Dawna and me) so this should be a good show for us.

Check us out all day Saturday, at table K-1. A handy map can be found here.

Emerald City Comicon 2007

March 27th, 2007 - No Responses

Yes, the Steam Crow Press duo, featuring KlawBerry, will be appearing at the Seattle Emerald City Comicon March 31 through April 1st. Oh Yeah.

If you happen to be in town, we’ll be in the Artist’s Alley, table number 183.

I am certain that this is the finest table location in the entire world. Please stop by and witness our hijinx.

We’ll be selling books, prints, button packs, and our SKULLED sketchbook.

I used to live in Seattle (Edmonds, technically) in the early 1990’s and kinda miss the place. What the heck, I miss it a great deal. I love the rain, the green, the mountains, and the indie folk.

I’ll try to photograph it.

Best!

5 Facts about the Monster World (Monstrus)

March 19th, 2007 - 2 Responses

It’s come to my attention that most non-monster folk don’t know much of anything about the world that I (and monster folk) come from… often called the “Monster World” or “Monstrus” by us.

Basically, monsters are found all around the “normal” human world, but most humans are just unable to notice them. They have jobs, eat food, and generally go about their business ignoring the “manlings” among them.

Manlings are rather simple beings, but can be of interest to us from time to time.

Here are 5 Facts about Monstrus that you should know about:

1. Monsters live in monster towns. Yes, I know that it might surprise you, but most monsters don’t live under your bed, or behind your closet doors. Nope. They live in their own communities, many of which are not far from human cities. “Maddach” is just a bridge away from Portland, Oregon, and “Ghoot” is found to the South of Spokane, Washington. Humans can not find these towns. Not possible for 99.9% manlings.

2. Monsters have jobs. Okay, so there I said it. No monster has time to scare you all night long, when there’s a living to be made. Some of us clean up garbage while others create cornmeal coatings for corndogs. Sure, some of us are able to pay the bills by “haunting” year round, but they’re equivalent to rock stars in your world.

3. Most Monsters are individuals. Now ignore what you know about that Harpy family in the South East, or the Sasquatch folks up in Canada somewhere… these are the exceptions to the rule. Most monsters are not of any particular race, but are in fact, unique beasts with unique powers, physiques and so forth. You won’t find a “Monster Manual” describing every type of monster… no way!

4. Our money is Gold. Monsters don’t do business with credit cards, paper money, or thin coins minted out of worthless pot metal; Monstrus does it’s commerce in Gold! It’s true. Most of us like some form of gold… it’s beautiful, shiny, and it sings to us. Most Manlings can’t see our Monstrus coins, since they’re minted by Fae folk.

5. The Top Hat Brigade is our enemy. Headed by “Monsterologist” (ha!) Duke Davis, the Top Hat Brigade claims to want nothing more than to “study and document all things monster.” In reality, this group is a shady criminal organization, with the goal to take everyone’s Monstrus Gold and lock up all of the monsters. If you get a chance, ask Mr. Davis about his vault of gold coins in his castle… and watch his plump face crack into a smile.

Okay, that’s enough for today. However, I’ll be writing more about Monstrus in hopes of helping you understand more about the unseen world that surrounds you.

WonderCon 2007 Wrap

March 6th, 2007 - No Responses

So WonderCon 2007 is in the books.

I would have blogged about it from the convention, but our hotel was under reconstruction and they didn’t have Wifi. So be it.

First off, thanks to everyone who had a good hard look at KlawBerry. Many of you were even kind enough to pick up a copy, which was doubly cool of you. If you like KlawBerry, please show the book to people. Behold the power of the KLAW!

The Moscone North had an odd vibe to it. I’m not sure what it was, but it just felt quite a bit different from last year’s WonderCon. Nonetheless, we had a great time, even if it was kinda strange. Maybe it’s just me. I’m kinda odd.

We picked up a few cool things, including Ragnar’s “King of the Road” and David Colman’s “The Art of Animal Character Design“. Both are excellent books for certain.

We also got to chat with all kinds of fine artists including; Attaboy, Ryan Claytor, Paul Horn, Gris Grimly, Rhode Montijo, Ben Walker, Mike Mignola & family, Jamie Baker, Joe Pekar, Alberto Ruiz, Rafael Navarro, and many more. It was a big amount of fun and each and every one of these guys is hugely talented.

San Francisco is a place of wonder, though I probably don’t have to tell you that. There was a minor earthquake there while we were there, though I only heard my own belly rumbles. The city is filled with tons of small/cool shops, stores, and restaurants… a wonder of a modern city. I ate Japanese, Chinese, and Italian, methinks.

I also got to see the Super7 Store, which is supercool. I wish that we sold more books though, so I could buy some of their tasty toys. I’m jonesin for a big transparent mecha-gojiru! On a good note, the owner contacted me about carrying my books, so I’m really excited about that.

Alright, that’s my update.
